WordPress: Top 8 Common Issues for Long Term Users
href="http://www.creativedevelopment.com.au/">
class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5149" title="wordpress-logo-notext-rgb" src="http://dg8ayrhi1mfec.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/wordpress-logo-notext-rgb-300x300.png" alt="" width="300" height="300" />
We have been working more and more with WordPress, so we thought we would list the top 10 most uncommon issues that can occur if you ever use WordPress over a preiod of time.
How to Hide the Admin Bar
The easiest way to do this is to make a change to your css by adding the following;
#wpadminbar
/> { display: none; visibility: hidden; }
The benefits are that this will not change your core code, and it will allow you to bring it back easily if you need to.
An Unexpected HTTP Error occurred during the API request.
This is a common issue if you have an old version of WordPress, usually 3.2. You can do it by making the following change.
Edit file plugin-install.php
/> in directory wp-admin/includes
/> and find the timeout setting. It is by default set to 15. Increase to 60.
/> $request = wp_remote_post(‘http://api.wordpress.org/plugins/info/1.0/’, array( ‘timeout’ => 60, ‘body’ => array(‘action’ => $action, ‘request’ => serialize($args))) );
However we highly recommend you just update your core.
Help My Site Has Been Hacked
We covered a lot of this in our post when we were href="http://www.creativedevelopment.com.au/wordpress/google-malware-warning-how-we-removed-the-curse/">hacked.
- Don’t Panic
- Backup everything on a local drive/folder that you have marked as HACKED code
- Use href="http://sitecheck.sucuri.net/scanner/">Sucuri’s scanner on the live site. Again, confirm the original diagnosis.
- Scan for iframes, and BASE64 coding.
- Look in the header.php for suspicious code.
- Get to the cause, search for current known vulnerabilities, look for problems with timthumb
- Do a fresh install of WordPress, a fresh theme as well if you can, only upload your theme and database
- Test your site again
- Install WordPress firewall2 and any other security plugins you feel necessary.
PHP Deprecated’ warnings on every screen
Installing WordPress on a IIS3 or Windows server has its own problems. In your wp-settings.php file, you’ll find this code:
/> // Add define('WP_DEBUG',true); to wp-config.php to enable display of notices during development. if (defined('WP_DEBUG') and WP_DEBUG == true) { error_reporting(E_ALL); } else { error_reporting(E_ALL ^ E_NOTICE ^ E_USER_NOTICE); }
/> Change that “E_ALL ^ E_NOTICE ^ E_USER_NOTICE” bit to zero.
How do I change Password Protected text?
If you have an installation that you want to use password protected pages, there is a chance you might want to customise how those pages are presented. All you have to do is add the following to your functions.php file
<?php add_filter( 'the_password_form', 'custom_password_form' );
function custom_password_form() {
global $post; $label = 'pwbox-'.( empty( $post->ID ) ? rand() : $post->ID );
$o = '<form action="' . get_option('siteurl') . '/wp-pass.php" method="post"> ' . __( "This post is password
protected. To view it please enter your password below:" ) . ' <label for="' . $label . '">' . __( "Password:" )
. ' </label><input name="post_password" id="' . $label . '" type="password" size="20" />
<input type="submit" name="Submit" value="' . esc_attr__( "Submit" ) . '" /> </form> '; return $o;
} ?>
Fatal Error: Out of Memory
This is common on shared server installs, or installs where you are trying to upload a big plugin or media. It is relatively straight forward to change;
1) Add/edit a php.ini file in the root/public_html folder of your site. Add/change the values for memory_limit. By default it should see memory_limit = 8M. Try changing it to 24M.
2) If you can’t find the php.ini file, open up the PHP file which requires more memory and add this line just after ini_set(’memory_limit’, ‘12M’); we can increase memory upto 16M or 24M to resolve the issue. But do it try with 12M first.
3) In last, open the .htaccess file from the root/public_html folder and add this line php_value memory_limit 12M
I have lost my password/user can I recover from PHPMyadmin?
Losing your password should be fine if you want to recover it back to your email address, but if this is not an option, then you have to rely on PHPMyadmin.
All you have to do is go to the user table, and change the password from there. You will have to make sure that the encoding is set to MD5 or it will not work.
How can I make an admin user with PHPMyadmin?
If you are a looking to add/change a user to become an administrator, it is a little more complicated than a lost password. First you have to add the user to the table, making sure that the level is set to 0. Then in the user_meta table you have to add the following;
- Click on the “Insert” tab to insert a new row.
- Fill in the following information
- umeta_id - leave this blank it is automatically generated
- user_id – this is the id of the user you created in the previous steps
- meta_key – for this step insert wp_capabilities
- meta_value – insert exactly this –
a:1:{s:13:"administrator";b:1;}
- Insert another row with this information
- umeta_id - leave this blank it is automatically generated
- user_id – this is the id of the user you created in the previous steps
- meta_key – for this step insert wp_user_level
- meta_value – insert 10
- Click the “Go” button in phpMyAdmin to insert the row.

Article Marketing-The Best SEO Tool
href="http://www.creativedevelopment.com.au/seo/article-marketing-the-best-seo-tool/attachment/article-marketing-1/" rel="attachment wp-att-5169">
class="alignright size-full wp-image-5169" src="http://dg8ayrhi1mfec.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/article-marketing-1.jpg" alt="" width="240" height="128" />An article is a readable content about a product, service, news or other topics of general interest. A well written article is a guide and often works better than spoken words. In business article marketing is used to describe a product or service by providing informative content to the readers and prospective customers. It is one of the best ways to get ranked high in search results of the internet search engines.
How to do Effective Article Marketing?
Article marketing is not an easy job but it requires a well planned and tactical approach. The internet is full of copied content that most people use to get fast results with minimum effort. Though many search engines are selective, the rule is bypassed and many plagiarized articles got published even through popular search engines like Google and Yahoo. The readers reject such articles and may not work well in the long run. To do effective article marketing the following key points are important for success.
1. Article Title:
The title grabs the attention of the reader. Therefore it should tell what is going to describe in the article. The most important keyword is included in the title. The title should attempt to provide an answer to the topic that is written in the body of the article.
2. Article Body:
There is no need of writing a lengthy article for internet marketing purpose. The number of words can be anything between 300 to 500 words. It is better to write pros and cons rather than writing only the advantages of any product or service. The option for a final judgment may be left to the reader. Only one point may be written in each paragraph with a natural flow from start to end. It is also important to use the most frequent keywords strategically in the article.
3. The Resource Box:
The readers often seek the origin or author details of a well written article. Adding a resource box is therefore important to the writer. It is a place where the author can provide personal details, website address and links to the product or service and should be brief as far as possible.
href="http://www.creativedevelopment.com.au/seo/article-marketing-the-best-seo-tool/attachment/article-marketing-2/" rel="attachment wp-att-5170">
class="alignleft size-full wp-image-5170" src="http://dg8ayrhi1mfec.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/article-marketing-2.jpg" alt="" width="240" height="221" />Relevance to the interest of the readers is an important factor when writing an article. No reader is interested to go deep by reading some garbage written. Wherever possible add relevant images and videos to get a better understanding of the topic and more realistic experience.
Promoting the article to various article directories and web-2 sites gives wide publicity. Such article sites may be selected based on page rank, the number of readers, ease of use and its terms and conditions to accept articles for publication. Nowadays there are many automatic article spinning and submission tools available. Its effectiveness greatly varies because of the many drawbacks that come up during the submissions. It is better to check a software spun article manually before it going to get published.

Google’s Over Optimisation Penalty
Google has revealed plans to penalise the search rankings of websites that overuse search engine optimisation techniques.
Matt Cutts, a software engineer within Google’s Webspam team, title="Roundtable audio" href="http://www.seroundtable.com/google-over-seo-update-14887.html" target="_blank">told the SXSW conference last week that changes to the search crawler could be enacted within “weeks”.
They would target websites that attempted to elevate their search rankings by providing a suspicious amount of keywords on a page, exchanging too many links or making changes “beyond what a normal person would expect,” he said.
“The idea is basically to try and level the playing ground a little bit,” he said.
“All those people who have been doing – for lack of a better word – over-optimisation – or overly doing their SEO compared to the people who are just making great content and trying to make a fantastic site, we want to make that playing field a little bit more level.

Selecting a Shopping Cart for WordPress
href="http://www.creativedevelopment.com.au/ecommerce/selecting-a-shopping-cart-for-wordpress/attachment/shopping-cart-1/" rel="attachment wp-att-5139">
class="alignright size-full wp-image-5139" src="http://dg8ayrhi1mfec.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/shopping-cart-1.jpg" alt="" width="240" height="170" />E-Commerce is gradually dominating the entire business scenario in all parts of the world. Many small and big online stores are built on wordpress platform with very easy to follow navigation options for the customers. The most important advantage of an online business is that it can function virtually by coordinating various business segments like manufactures, dealers, payment gateways, banks, postal services and courier services to sell a product or service to a large number of customers. A great part of the online business is now made easy with the introduction of full fledged shopping carts that help the customer to add product, make payments and keep a record of all transactions done online.
How Shopping Carts Work?
An online store can be set up either in conjunction with or separate from a physical store or a manufacturing location. A customer should be able to locate the product or service easily by navigating from the home page. Once the customer is satisfied with the product or service, it is placed in a shopping basket just similar to a store basket to purchase items physically. The shopping cart software automatically adds any additional products desired by the customer and proceeds to the check out page. The final price of the product is arrived by adding any taxes, customs duty, or providing any discounts and bonuses as the case may be. The next step is to make electronic payments using various payment options like credit cards, debit cards, paypal and other payment services. Nowadays many online stores provide the facility for cash on delivery meaning that there is no need of making advance payments.
Shopping Carts for WordPress: Everybody know that the plugins enhance the functionality of the wordpress sites considerably. Many easy to install plugins have been developed for wordpress to use them as shopping carts. Some of them are free to use but others require payment. Brief descriptions about the leading shopping carts for wordpress are provided below.

In this shopping cart there is no way to customize an invoice but it can be viewed via the web browser.
2. eShop: The e Shop plugin is another free program with rich features and many e-commerce functioinalities.It uses the existing wordpress framework with downloadable products and stock control. However it has limited payment options for transaction.
href="http://www.creativedevelopment.com.au/ecommerce/selecting-a-shopping-cart-for-wordpress/attachment/shopping-cart-2/" rel="attachment wp-att-5140">

It has membership options, tax management by countries, multiple shopping, currency change options, custom email templates and it comes with WP affiliate platform integration. It has wide payment options besides the integration with Google analytics, zendesk, Spreedly and Gravity Forms. With this shopping cart, one can sell almost everything from physical products, digital downloads, music and e books. This shopping cart comes with Amazon S3 integration enabling the products to deliver fast.
href="http://www.creativedevelopment.com.au/ecommerce/selecting-a-shopping-cart-for-wordpress/attachment/shopping-cart-3/" rel="attachment wp-att-5143">
class="alignright size-full wp-image-5143" src="http://dg8ayrhi1mfec.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/shopping-cart-3.jpg" alt="" width="240" height="95" />4. Ecwid: This is free to use shopping cart for wordpress.The installation and maintenance of this plugin is very easy. However it uses Ajax that may affect search engine optimization. For using the site users must enable JavaScript.
The selection of a shopping cart greatly depends on needs. For small online stores WP e-commerce is still a better option. The paid program like cart 66 is a best tool for those online stores having different products with high business volume.

The best Sydney marketing blogs
We aim to become the best href="http://www.creativedevelopment.com.au/blog/">marketing blog in Sydney, well we think so anyway. Nearly two years ago we wrote a href="http://www.creativedevelopment.com.au/web-design/marketing-sydney/">post about the best marketing blogs in Sydney, and we included some 36 blogs that were active and posting interesting content. Sadly, we could now only find 10 of those original websites that are still blogging or writing regularly. Most blogs stopped posting sometime mid last year, and a large portion no longer exist at all.
This year we have decided to do it all again, although this time, we are going to be a little more strict. First we are looking for blogs that have posts at least three times a month in the last six months. That means if a blog has not been updated since before Christmas, it is not going to make the list. Second we are looking for websites where the blog is a main feature, so a lot of businesses that use the blog as a way to promote other services are not going to make the list. Lastly we are looking for at least some current content. Blogging about this vs that is fine, but unless there is something that shows currency, the blog will not make the list. Also, as a change from last year, we are looking only for blogs, not magazines or online publications.
Obviously if you think you have a blog worth talking about, and you want to see it here, just style="text-decoration: underline;">leave a post in the comments, and we will take a look.
Again, in no particular order;

It’s often difficult for small businesses to build credibility, instilling the perception of reliability in consumer’s minds. Owner-operators, particularly contractors and those in the service industry, generally publish their mobile phone number in newspaper ads, on their websites and on their vehicles. That’s what you are supposed to do and the phone number should be prominent!

Press Release Writing for SEO
href="http://www.creativedevelopment.com.au/seo/press-release-writing-for-seo/attachment/press-release/" rel="attachment wp-att-5056">
class="alignright size-full wp-image-5056" src="http://www.creativedevelopment.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/press-release.jpg" alt="" width="133" height="240" />A press release is a written statement about a product, service or event. It is an essential part of public relations because it aims to target the media from which the readers get the latest information. To write a press release for search engines, the content should be optimized for keywords. It differs from traditional offline press release writing which mainly involved texts and images.
The first step in writing a search engine optimized press release is to identify the best keywords about the topic you are writing. The content should be around the main primary keywords but use of secondary keywords in the text help to get the visibility more.
There should be a brief headline written in bold that says what the press release is all about. It should be around hundred characters with a primary keyword about the topic. The headline should grab the attention of the readers and prompt them to read further.
A short summary of the content is often desirable which may be written in one or two sentences. The summary should include secondary keywords and the maximum length may be limited to around 250 characters.

class="alignleft size-full wp-image-5057" src="http://www.creativedevelopment.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/press-release-2.jpg" alt="" width="240" height="197" />The body of the article is the most important part in an SEO optimized press release. The starting paragraph should generate interest in the readers by including the introduction in a precise manner. It should not exaggerate any facts with fancy words and phrases. In the succeeding paragraphs, each topic or point can be explained in detail and efforts should be made to give answers to common questions concerning the product or service. Two to four keywords, both primary and secondary, may be included in the body of the press release. Any overuse of keywords will result in rejection by search engines and the press release may fail to reach the prospective customers. The press release should be written in third person. The end of the article body should include a brief description about the organization or company who is writing the press release. A link to the home page or contact information like email, fax or phone numbers may be included in the about section.
A press release can be published online using text, images and videos. It can be further popularized with the help of social media. The best press releases will include a call to action so that readers take interest to know more.
